A BRIGHT NEW BEGINNING FOR AFFORDABLE 3-D PRINTING!
In August, we shared with you our continued effort to find the best financial
alternative for Desktop Factory. That search, which put us on the road to a sale of the company, has finally come to an end.
What I could not confirm at that time is that our buyer is the leadership brand in the Additive Manufacturing industry,
which means that they have the resources and desire to deliver on the promise of a truly low cost, easy to use 3-D printer.
The complete terms of the sale, which closed on August 31, 2009, have not been disclosed. However, 3D Systems Corporation of Rock Hill,
South Carolina has acquired the key assets of Desktop Factory including intellectual property, know-how and tools.
Recognizing the importance of continuity, the core team of remaining Desktop Factory employees was invited to join
3D Systems, underscoring their intention to move forward with the development of a sub-$5K 3-D printer.
This is a bright new beginning for Desktop Factory and all of you who have supported us over the past 5 years.
We are pleased to introduce you to the new owner, 3D Systems Corporation.
WHO IS 3D SYSTEMS CORPORATION?
3D Systems, publicly traded on NASDAQ under the symbol TDSC,
is a leading provider of 3-D Printing, Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing solutions. Its systems and materials reduce the time and cost of
designing products and facilitate direct and indirect manufacturing by creating actual parts directly from digital input. These solutions are
used for design communication and prototyping as well as for production of functional end-use parts.
Essentially, 3D Systems founded the Additive Manufacturing marketplace in 1986 and have never looked back. With Chuck Hull,
one of the original founders, leading new product development and Abe Reichental at the helm as CEO, 3D Systems offers
the widest array of technologies in the industry on a global basis. This includes the recently launched V-Flash® 3-D Modeler,
the lowest cost, and highest quality 3-D printer available today at just $9,900.
Then and now we continue to need your support.
As the single most powerful asset in this transaction you will ultimately determine the success of 3D Systems' acquisition of Desktop Factory.
While they have committed to complete the development of this breakthrough technology they will need time to fully assess the maturity of our offering,
time to potentially improve it and time to test and prepare to launch the first sub-$5K 3-D printer.
There is no one else who understands your commitment to Desktop Factory as they do and feels a responsibility to build on the foundation we have laid.
But perhaps you should 'hear' this from 3D Systems first hand.
A MESSAGE FROM ABE REICHENTAL
Until recently, cost and complexity have confined 3-D Printers to the shops and design departments of
major corporations and premier design firms. The growing success and acceptance of V-Flash®, our first sub-$10,000 compact desktop 3-D Printer, reaffirms our
commitment to one day make 3-D Printing as common in offices, factories, schools and homes as 2-D printers are today. We believe that the technology
already developed by Desktop Factory in combination with our extensive technology portfolio should lead to a new generation of fast, simple and
affordable 3-D Printers capable of making durable plastic parts.
We want to keep this exciting conversation going. The ability to design, create and produce models and prototypes — on your desktop, within a few hours — should
be available to all. Our global economy runs on innovation, and we intend to provide the necessary 3-D printing tools to help you succeed
independent of the size of your company and budget or your design challenges. You can count on our commitment to affordable 3-D printers — starting with V-Flash® today
and even more affordable 3-D printers in the future.
In the coming weeks we will announce our formal communication strategy and invite you to participate with us as we seek your input and ongoing support.
We are very excited about the potential before us and look forward to delivering an even wider choice of affordable, accessible 3-D printing technologies.
